Thinking about Window Boxes: Part Three

Now if you would like to see how I got to this point click on Part One and Part Two. These boxes are just above the front yard flower beds where you can see here what I've planted.  The area below is filled with purples, whites and pinks and lots of green.

I decided to go with a mixture of classic choices and a little hardy succulent to try this year.
It didn't cost a fortune either. Bonus!

Drumroll please...

Petunias

Moss Rose (a trailing annual)

Blue Spruce Sedum ( a trailing perennial)

When thinking about it, I figured it would be nice if there was something that could be the foundation plant and that would possibly grow large and beautiful over the years, esp, since the growing season here is so short. It will also produce sweet yellow flowers late in summer to help us into the fall season.
Best thing about the above choices, drought resistance. Resistance is not futile. Couldn't resist.

Now in order to help with the problem of the drying out of the box, which is much easier to happen with container plantings as they are elevated and keep maintain less moisture. So to counteract this problem, I bought $4 of 2 inch thick sponges.  The boxes were lined with straw and then a mixture of perlite/peat moss and potting soil for drainage.  I  put the sponges in the middle layer then covered with more of the mixture. So far-so good.

If things go super well, perhaps the blue sedum will keep growing and getting bigger each year. Wouldn't that be something? The yellow flowers are so pretty too, it makes me feel like next year maybe should add some yellow to the pinks and purples below?

What do you think?

Now I have to get to cleaning the bugs from the inside of the windows in the garage. (Bleh-yuck)
Any good ideas, or just get to it? The whole garage needs such a cleaning and to be reorganized.
But that's another day.
